Wearing Your Words Like a Loose Garment: Songwriting Techniques and/or Critiques with Erin McKeown
Although Erin started writing songs while still in high school in hometown Fredericksburg, Virginia, she really began earning her chops while attending Brown University, releasing two albums before graduation and gigging on weekends whenever and wherever possible. She hasn’t slowed down, famously averaging 200 live shows a year. McKeown has been a clinician at the IMA’s summer rock programs for girls and is bringing an extended version of her songwriting clinic to all interested songwriters.
Day Session: 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. $95
Techniques: You write (or want to write) songs but have trouble getting started or find yourself stuck in the middle, unable to finish. Spend this daylong workshop with Erin as she shares her own experiences moving through these common stumbling blocks. Students will participate in a variety of exercises aimed at making the songwriting process less daunting. Topics include collaborative songwriting, stream of consciousness writing work, listening, and the editing process.
Evening Session: 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. $45
Critiques: You’ve got finished songs but feel they might be tweaked a bit, or you just want an outside professional opinion. The evening will be an opportunity to play a song or two (depending on time) for Erin and other workshop participants and receive some feedback as well as a chance to hear other songwriters’ works. Wear your words like a loose garment, but make your songs tight!
